Course overview

This course will offer students a solid grounding in conducting qualitative research in the field of Cultural Studies and beyond. Students will further develop their knowledge and advance applied research skills by designing and implementing their own small scale research project and documenting their findings. Students will apply their knowledge and skills to a range of research problems and develop a deeper understanding of ethical protocols for research with individuals, communities and industry partners. This course aligns with the programs focus on developing an understanding of qualitative research methods and ethical practice in the discipline.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain past and present methodological approaches and debates to research in cultural studies
  • Consolidate qualitative research methods for the study of culture
  • Demonstrate development and embedding of a reflexive researcher guided by ethical research protocols, including First Nations ethical research principles
  • Apply methods of qualitative data analysis to data sets
  • Design and conduct a small-scale research project
  • Communicate research findings in appropriate formats
