Course overview

What factors influence Australians' trust in public institutions How does where you live affect life satisfaction How do you design a survey questionnaire that can tell you things that the existing data cannot This course teaches students how to use quantitative research to answer these and other important questions. The focus will be on the logic of quantitative reasoning and its application to practical problems in social research. Students will be introduced to survey research and statistical data analysis techniques and will work competently and confidently with quantitative data across different sources, including from various Australian governmental agencies.

  • Apply basic quantitative terminology
  • Identify, handle and critically assess different quantitative data provided by the Australian government
  • Conduct basic data analysis from a large Australian dataset
  • Design a short on-line survey to resolve problems with existing data sets
