Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop students' understandings of human rights frameworks to enable them to critically analyse crime and justice using social justice principles. In this course students will use the framework of human rights to explore the intersections of crime and harm, critically analysing how race, class, and gender impact justice outcomes. The course broadens students' understandings of crime and justice by exploring the principles of social justice, such as equality and rights, and examining how social structures and the justice system may prevent or facilitate social justice. Students will develop skills in advocacy and the ability to create training and awareness initiates to foster human rights and social justice in a range of contexts.

  • Examine the development and operationalisation of human rights standards at national and international levels.
  • Apply concepts of human rights to reframe traditional understandings of crime.
  • Analyse structural inequalities that impact crime and justice.
  • Evaluate criminal justice systems using social justice and human rights principles.
  • Develop skills in advocacy and the creation of training and awareness raising programs.
