Course overview

The aim of this course is to understand the impact of natural and built environments on those ageing or living with disablement. This course examines ageing and disability friendly design, planning principles, and policy as they relate to the natural and built environments. Students will learn to apply these planning and design principles to analysing; the home, transport and mobility, the workplace, leisure and recreation facilities, and urban spaces.

Course learning outcomes

  • demonstrate understandings of what constitutes positive and healthy living for ageing and disabled persons.
  • describe how the natural and built environment can affect `ageing in place' and living with disablement.
  • identify and evaluate age and disability friendly principles and apply these in practice
  • critically assess and evaluate policy and planning for mobility, autonomy, independence, and quality of life of ageing and disabled persons
