Course overview

This course examines the critical role of social theory in sociology and its capacity to produce impactful understandings of the social world. Students develop competency in social theory by learning its dynamics aspects. Social theories are not static and removed from everyday life. They are dynamically assembled and subject to critical scrutiny, which students in this course grasp by developing higher-order analytical skills. That social theories can be socially transformative is another key focus of this course. Students develop comprehension of major social theories, but they also reflect on how these theories are applied to significant social issues.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate effective comprehension and communication of theoretical ideas at an intermediate level
  • Discriminate and draw connections between social theories
  • Apply theories to analyse complex social issues
