Course overview

Many significant aspects of contemporary social life are mediated, including peoples use of social media and their engagement with various news sources. The aim of this course is to sociologically investigate the media landscapes that people exist in. How does the media as a social institution generate both social cohesion and division, such as through the spreading of moral panics What is distinctive about contemporary media forms and how does this shape and transform peoples social experience By exploring these and other questions, this course develops students capacity to critically analyse media content and the sociological implications of media systems.
