Course overview

The aim of this course is to build a set of evidence-based strategies to assist with personal development and to assist students with developing a professional identity as a worker in a counselling or psychology related field. In this course students will use psychological concepts and theories (e.g., resilience, stress, self and time management, academic competencies, positive psychology and communication) to build a set of strategies to assist with their personal and professional development. Students will explain how these strategies apply to their personal and professional lives by completing a reflective journal. Students will understand the interpersonal and employability skills that they already possess and will identify skills that require developing. Students will complete a career portfolio where they will demonstrate how they can utilise strengths and opportunities to overcome developmental needs and barriers to achieve their career goals.

Course learning outcomes

  • Recognise how psychological concepts and theories can be applied personally and professionally to increase well-being and achievement
  • Critically evaluate and reflect on psychological concepts and theories and make connections between the concepts and theories and personal and professional experiences
  • Identify interpersonal and other employability skills
  • Apply career management skills to design a career portfolio
