Course overview

Approaches to Culture introduces students to the foundations, futures, and applications of Cultural Studies as a distinctive interdisciplinary formation within the Humanities and Social Sciences. Students are invited to use the conceptual tools and methods of Cultural Studies to reflect upon their own experiences and identities, as well as to develop an historically-informed sense of contemporary culture. In doing so, students will lay the groundwork for further and more detailed engagements with the diverse theories and methods of Cultural Studies throughout the major.

Course learning outcomes

  • Characterise Cultural Studies as a unique field within the Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Engage with the theories of key thinkers who have influenced the Humanities and Social Sciences throughout the twentieth century
  • Apply diverse interpretive methods and strategies to analyse the meanings and messages prevalent in our culture
  • Use collaborative inquiry in classroom environments to discuss students' own cultural practices and explore those of others
  • Examine cultural artefacts, texts, and practices from multiple perspectives, being mindful of different identities and perspectives
