Course overview
This is a core course in the Graduate Certificate in Research Design intended to provide an opportunity for new
researchers to develop a specification for a research project in a chosen field of research, under the guidance
of an experienced researcher. Students will develop skills to undertake literature reviews and/or discovery of
prior work in the field of interest, and to critically review this work to identify opportunities to extend the
knowledge, understanding or art of practice in the field and to identify, where relevant, a research question or
knowledge gap or advance in practice to be addressed.

Course learning outcomes
- Locate relevant sources of information relating to the existing body of knowledge, prior research and/or prior practice in a selected specialised field.
- Critically review and evaluate prior work related to the topic field of interest, with a view to identifying currents gaps in knowledge, understanding or practice.
- Identify and describe opportunity/ies to extend the knowledge, understanding or practice in the selected field of research
- Formulate a concise statement of a research investigation or creative work project to be undertaken, justified in terms of the identified opportunity to extend knowledge, understanding or practice.
