Course overview

This is an elective course in the Graduate Certificate in Research Skills and Master of Research programs intended to provide an introduction to the various methodologies and methods that inform qualitative research. Students will be introduced to a range of qualitative research methods and perspectives, will have the opportunity to test out some of these methods and will also develop skills in question development and linking research methods to questions in a manner that facilitates robust research practice.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the basic premise of why (and when) qualitative research methods are a useful research tool, including the key strengths of various qualitative methods
  • Devise a data collection plan using a qualitative research method relevant to a specific area of research
  • Conduct analysis of qualitative data relevant to the Humanities or Social Sciences
  • Understand the significance of aligning research questions with appropriate research methods/methodologies
