Course overview

This is an elective course in the Graduate Certificate in Research Skills and Master of Research programs intended to provide an introduction to the use of quantitative methods in research in the humanities and social sciences. The focus will be on the logic of quantitative reasoning and its application to practical problems in sociological research. The course will focus on survey research and statistical techniques to analyse data collected in surveys, and identify other sources of quantitative data, including data compiled by various Australian government agencies.

Course learning outcomes

  • Understand and apply basic quantitative reasoning.
  • Devise a data collection plan using survey research relevant to a specific area of research
  • Locate and critically assess a range of quantitative data sets provided by the Australian Government and other agencies
  • Conduct analysis of standard data sets relevant to the Humanities or Social Sciences
