Course overview
This is a core course in the Graduate Certificate in Research Skills and Master of Research programs providing an introduction to the fundamentals of research for those who have no significant prior learning of research methods and skills. It forms a foundation from which further development of research skills can be undertaken through further coursework, and through the conduct of supervised research. Students will learn about the nature of research, how research is undertaken in different fields/disciplines, the role of social context for research, fundamentals of research methods, different ways of knowing and understanding, including Indigenous, creative and non-traditional knowledges.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe the nature of research and of variations in methods of undertaking research in different disciplines.
- Explain the considerations of conducting research in a social context.
- Explain the perspectives that Indigenous ways of knowing can bring to the understandings of research questions and approaches.
- Explain how research questions and approaches are differently framed in a variety of disciplinary contexts.
