Course overview

The aim of this course is to apply specialised evidence based clinical knowledge of pathology and mastery of skills of assessment, analysis of findings, planning, intervention and evaluation required for client centred rehabilitation physiotherapy practice. Students will apply the clinical knowledge and skills required for rehabilitation physiotherapy practice across the lifespan.

Students will apply advanced knowledge of the causes and mechanisms of abnormal movement, the pathophysiology and sequelae of a wide range of congenital, chronic and degenerative conditions requiring physiotherapy input in a rehabilitation setting.

Students will develop and apply the physiotherapy of skills of assessment, application of outcome measures, analysis of findings, planning, intervention and evaluation relevant to conditions they encounter on placement.

Implementation of evidence-based practice, culturally responsive care and communication within interprofessional practice, relevant to rehabilitation settings for individuals across the lifespan.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically apply recent developments in the specialised body of knowledge for common neurological, orthopaedic and cardiorespiratory conditions requiring ongoing rehabilitation (or habilitation) practice.
  • Demonstrate mastery of clinical reasoning skills to carry out an appropriate, client-centred holistic evaluation; to critically evaluate and measure the effectiveness of physiotherapy intervention; and to modify/cease management in a rehabilitation/habilitation setting.
  • Apply the assessment, management and interpersonal skills required to be effective in the role of physiotherapy as part of the interprofessional management of clients in a rehabilitation/ habilitation setting.
  • Demonstrate professional, culturally responsive and ethical behaviour required at entry level physiotherapist in the rehabilitation setting that is consistent with Australian Physiotherapy Association's and Physiotherapy Board of Australia's codes, policies and guidelines.
