Course overview

In this course, students will demonstrate culturally safe and responsive practice through the application of professional, legal and ethical obligations required of registered Physiotherapists in Australia, and advanced communication skills. Ethical principles and ethical reasoning models applied to physiotherapy. Principles and practice of cultural safety and responsiveness. Advanced written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills and professional behaviour. Codes of conduct including the Thresholds of Practice and professional and ethical standards and codes for Registered Physiotherapists and physiotherapy students in Australia.

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse legal requirements, professional, ethical and other relevant standards, codes and guidelines required for professional, ethical and culturally responsive behaviours appropriate for registered physiotherapists in Australia.
  • Analyse and demonstrate understanding of the social determinants of health.
  • Critically analyse cultural competency and responsiveness in the context of Physiotherapy practice.
  • Develop and demonstrate self-reflection skills consistent with the requirements of the Australian Health Professional Regulation Agency's Code of Conduct and Thresholds of Practice for Physiotherapists.
  • Demonstrate advanced written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills required for professional, ethical, legal and effective physiotherapy practice.
