Course overview
The aim of this course is to apply core professional and communication knowledge and skills required for gerontology physiotherapy practice in an interprofessional setting. Students will develop knowledge and skills required to work with older people (including Aboriginal peoples) on issues of ageing such as physiotherapy assessment principles and techniques; rehabilitation principles, managing issues of mental health and end of life care, managing issues of service provision (including interprofessional practice).
Course learning outcomes
- Discuss gerontology issues relevant to physiotherapy practice.
- Identify and summarise pertinent information relevant to physiotherapy practice from clinical case notes.
- Demonstrate a culturally and physically safe and effective physiotherapy assessment relevant to older adults.
- Accurately record physiotherapy clinical assessment findings, interventions and decisions that meet legal and professional requirements.
- Use clinical-reasoning skills to identify client-centred goals and appropriate outcome measures to determine the impact of physiotherapy.
- Describe interprofessional practice and the role of physiotherapists as part of the interprofessional healthcare team.
- Demonstrate professional, culturally safe and ethical behaviour.
