Course overview

The aim of this course is to introduce students to legislation and codes that underpin Physiotherapy Practice in Australia and develop the foundational knowledge and skills required for professional practice. Physiotherapy Practice Thresholds in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand; Physiotherapy codes of conduct; legislation governing physiotherapy practice in Australia; foundational skills in human movement analysis and biomechanics; foundational clinical skills in manual handling and selected physical assessment and management techniques.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe key aspects of the Physiotherapy Practice Thresholds in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, codes of conduct, and legislation governing physiotherapy practice in Australia.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the foundation biomechanical concepts: kinematics, forces, gravity, and biomechanics of biological tissue.
  • Relate biomechanical principles to human movement, safe manual handling, and selected physical assessment and management techniques.
  • Demonstrate competency in execution of basic manual handling and selected assessment and management techniques.
