Course overview

This course will provide students with a detailed knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and embryology. Anatomy of the internal and external adult human heart as well as thoracic and vascular anatomy. Detailed embryological formation of the normal heart.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe and demonstrate detailed and specialised knowledge of cardiac and thoracic anatomy including the cardiac chambers, great arteries, surrounding anatomy, anatomical relationships, valves and related apparatus, conduction system, coronary artery supply, layers of the heart and innervation of the heart.
  • Describe the normal embryological formation of the heart including formation of the atria, ventricles, great vessels, valves and septa.
  • Describe the foetal and neonatal circulation including the changes that happen at birth and how these affect the heart.
