Course overview

Thtis course aims to further provide students with Radiation Therapy specific theory and knowledge of rationale and treatment of common treatment sites. Content includes: principles of simulation (conventional and virtual); fluoroscopy and verification; radiation therapy equipment and linear accelerator features: multi-leaf collimation, electronic portal imaging methods including computed radiography, EPI, OBI and cone beam CT; imaging for planning in multiple planes; fundamentals of CT image viewing; patient treatment record documentation; monitor unit calculation checks; mould room procedures and immobilisation aids; mask cast making procedure and patient instruction/ explanation; strategies applicable to examining patients from varying cultural groups including Aboriginal patients; prevention of needle stick injury and safe practice technique in tattooing patients; grief management and application in the wider context; (fellow workers, families and carers); rationale and technique for radiation therapy treatment to the pelvis (prostate, seminoma, rectum, gynaecological and bladder malignancies) and related anatomy; physiology and pathology including grade, stage and mode of spread, radiobiological effects on normal and malignant tissue; cultural and professional issues. National protocols published on safety and quality in health care.
