Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop knowledge and enhance cultural competency of healthy ageing determinants and wellbeing strategies for older Aboriginal Australians. Lifespan and age structure of Aboriginal populations; health impacts of ageing; social and cultural importance of older Aboriginal Australians; divergence in healthy ageing determinants for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal groups; prevalence of age-related diseases, urban and rural effects, definitions of healthy ageing for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal groups; Aboriginal Elder perspectives on healthy ageing; cultural safety in measuring health and wellbeing and in the provision of care to older Aboriginal people; international comparisons with ageing in other first nation peoples.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe age structures and prevalence of age-related disease of Aboriginal Australians compared with non-Aboriginal groups
  • Demonstrate cultural competence in presenting definitions of healthy ageing and divergent perspectives amongst Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians
  • Describe health service provision for older Aboriginal Australians and develop strategies and solutions to facilitate healthy ageing
  • Develop hypotheses to explain global variation in healthy ageing and devise novel concepts for enhancing healthy ageing in Aboriginal Australians
