Course overview
The aim of this course is to develop a deeper understanding of the key approaches to health promotion. Building on Social Foundations in Health, in this course you be introduced to key theoretical concepts and principles of health promotion and their application in addressing contemporary health challenges. In particular, you will focus on how health promotion seeks to empower people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. By examining current real-world case studies, you will develop an appreciation and understanding how health promotion in action moves beyond a focus on individual behaviour towards a wide range of social and environmental interventions. This course will expand your thinking in regard to health that can be incorporated in any future health professional career.
Course learning outcomes
- Review and critique major approaches to health promotion
- Critically explain the historical, social and political context of major health promotion programs and theories, including the Ottawa Charter
- Apply major approaches to health promotion policy and theory to contemporary public health issues
- Identify and describe the key challenges facing health promotion programs in both developed and developing country contexts
