Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide the skills to review and conduct qualitative research. In this course you will develop an understanding of qualitative research, with an emphasis on how people interpret and give meaning to their everyday worlds. In particular, you will learn how to recognise and reflect on the strengths and limitations of different qualitative research methodologies, understand the links between theory and practice, critically assess qualitative research, and consider ethical and practical issues involved in conducting qualitative research. This course will expand your thinking in relation to population health issues, as it provides historical and socio-cultural contexts for health and illness.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the core characteristics of qualitative research in health, and how these differ from quantitative methodologies
  • Demonstrate understanding of the ethical conduct of qualitative research, with a particular focus on marginalised populations
  • Identify and compare major qualitative research methodologies and appropriately apply them to specific research questions and public health issues
