Course overview

The aim of this course is to promote an understanding of the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health, with a specific focus on the health of Indigenous Australians and disadvantaged populations. Core concepts of health; common measures of health (morbidity, birth/death rates, burden of disease etc.); risk factors, social , cultural and environmental determinants affecting health across state, national, international populations with special reference to marginalised or disadvantaged groups such as indigenous peoples; current and new challenges to health and health care systems, health promotion: principles and interventions.

Course learning outcomes

  • Discuss burden of disease in the national and international context.
  • Compare and contrast health status (risk, prevalence and outcomes) across local, national and international populations as a result of, social, cultural and environmental factors.
  • Identify and describe the basis for differences in health status with particular emphasis on Indigenous Australians and disadvantaged populations.
  • Identify and describe current and future challenges to health and health care systems.
  • Demonstrate developing foundation skills in academic writing, referencing, sourcing information, and creating, manipulating and interpreting data and graphs.
