Course overview
This course covers Individual Differences, which is concerned with understanding how and why people differ psychologically, despite broad similarities shared by all human kind. We will review major theories and findings in the fields of intelligence and personality. We will cover how constructs like intelligence and personality are assessed in research and practice. The curriculum builds on knowledge from first and second years, including statistics knowledge.
Course learning outcomes
- Understand the psychometric debate relating to different theories of personality and intelligence
- Understand how contemporary psychometric theory is applied to the assessment of individual differences
- Apply the principles of psychological assessment
- Understand the extent to which individual differences are related to human behaviour, cognition, emotion and motivation
- Understand how individual differences can be applied to improve an understanding of psychological concepts and psychological practise
- Recognise the content of different kinds of ability and personality tests and to be familiar with the practical and ethical considerations associated with psychological testing
- Analyse data using computer-based procedures
