Course overview

The aim of this course is to evaluate language, language evolution and language development from a neurobiological perspective, and provide an advanced understanding of how the neurobiological underpinnings of language shape human communication. Specialised research methods to investigate the cognitive neuroscience and neurobiology of language; evolutionary origins of language in its various modalities (speech, sign language, reading and writing); development and lifespan changes of language in the brain; the challenge of language diversity for models of language in the brain.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate advanced anatomical, functional and physiological knowledge regarding the neural basis of language.
  • Apply experimental skills and knowledge relevant to the neurobiology and neurocognition of language.
  • Interpret and critically assess research findings relevant to the neurobiology of language.
