Course overview
The aim of this course is to further develop students' understanding of the main theories and concepts in lifespan developmental psychology and to apply this to develop solutions to contemporary psychosocial developmental problems. Students will build up their knowledge of developmental theories, principles and characteristics of individuals across the major developmental periods (prenatal, infancy and childhood, adolescence, and adulthood) in the key developmental domains (physical, cognitive, social and emotional). They will apply this knowledge to issues in lifespan development, cultural and ethical issues.
Course learning outcomes
- Apply knowledge of the major theories of developmental psychology to explain contemporary developmental issues at different periods of the lifespan
- Explain the role of cultural and other contextual influences on human development
- Analyse pathways to disadvantage in various life domains and suggest interventions to foster resilience
