Course overview

This course aims to equip students with knowledge and practice of counselling skills. Building upon foundational concepts introduced in Counselling Foundations, students will develop counselling skills through practical activities and role-plays in small groups. All skills will be embedded in culturally responsive and ethical practice and students will reflect on their current competence and future skill development. This course aligns with the program’s intent to provide students with communication and interpersonal skills needed to work with individuals, groups, and communities. 

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate effective rapport-building skills
  • Demonstrate counselling and interpersonal skills relevant to the practice of counselling
  • Understand how to apply counselling and interpersonal skills to different scenarios, situations, and with different client groups within role-plays
  • Demonstrate self-awareness and critically evaluate their own counselling and interpersonal skills and identify areas for future skill development
