Course overview

This course aims to extend students’ understanding of basic psychological principles, theories and research related to individuals, with a focus on learning and behaviour, cognition and thought, and motivation and emotion. The course builds on from the first-year course Understanding Individual Behaviour and Cognition. There is a focus on practical applications to real-world issues and problems, ethics and cultural biases that exist in psychology related to individuals. Assessment will demonstrate achievement of core psychological literacy skills, such as ability to analyse and critique theory and research in the discipline of psychology and communicate these in written and oral formats.

Course learning outcomes

  • Interpret and evaluate individual psychological knowledge claims and theories
  • Apply theories and evidence from research on individual behaviour and cognition to address a problem
  • Communicate individual psychology theories and applications using APA conventions in both written and oral formats
  • Explore aspects of cultural diversity and the importance of inclusive practices in psychological research and application
  • Evaluate the ethical principles underpinning psychology research methods and practices related to individuals
