Course overview

This course aims to extend students understanding of basic psychological principles, theories and research related to individuals, with a focus on learning and behaviour, cognition and thought, and motivation and emotion. The course builds on from the first-year course Understanding Individual Behaviour and Cognition (PSYC 1001). There is a focus on practical applications to real-world issues and problems, ethics and cultural biases that exist in psychology related to individuals.

Course learning outcomes

  • Interpret and evaluate psychological knowledge claims in the context of theories of individual psychology
  • Analyse theories that explain individual cognition and behaviour demonstrating depth of knowledge
  • Communicate the real-world application of individual psychological theory to solve a problem using APA conventions in both written and/or oral formats
  • Explore aspects of cultural diversity and the importance of inclusive practices in psychological research and application
  • Evaluate the ethical principles underpinning psychology research methods and practices related to individuals
