Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop students' understanding of key psychological concepts relevant to health care practice. Students will be introduced to basic concepts of psychology (including the biological bases of behaviour, learning theory, lifespan development, personality psychology, and health and wellbeing) with an emphasis on relevance in a health care setting. They will also be introduced to the psychological impact of illness and trauma, and social and interpersonal relationships.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the major stages of human psychological development throughout the lifespan
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of psychology including theories of learning, sensation and perception, personality, motivation, and interpersonal relationships
  • Apply the basic concepts of psychology to health and illness
  • Describe psychological models relevant to understanding wellbeing and ill health.
