Course overview
This course aims to introduce students to cognitive neuroscience, which studies the relationship between the brain, human cognition and behaviour. It presents an overview of the neuroanatomical and neurophysiological underpinnings of cognitive systems, supplemented by an introduction to the main methodological approaches used to study these systems. A laboratory component will provide students with basic practical skills in using electroencephalography (EEG) to study the human mind and brain, thereby laying the foundations for more advanced research skills.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of the neural basis of behaviour and cognition
- Evaluate the advantages and limitations of the main methods used in cognitive neuroscience
- Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate fundamental claims relating to cognitive neuroscience research
- Demonstrate the ability to undertake basic EEG data collection
