Course overview

How are futures socially produced, contested and varied How do social futures exist across different domains of society What does it mean to engage in utopian forms of thinking, and how are these socially constructed and consequential By asking these and other related questions, this course examines how sociology is critically and creatively forward looking. By developing key competencies in futures thinking, students gain powerful perspectives about how another world is possible.

  • Describe and draw connections between sociological perspectives of the future
  • Interpret a cultural artefact for its future implications from a sociological perspective
  • Utilise a futures thinking method to systematically and collaboratively analyse a complex future oriented issue
