Course overview

The aim of this course is to examine the historical development of Australian social policies and develop an understanding of their theoretical and ideological underpinnings. Students will develop further knowledge of the themes in the historical development of Australian social policy as well an understanding of significant social policies and the policy making process. Students will demonstrate the skill of applying a theoretical framework of policy analysis to (some of) employment, income, security, housing, health, family, social inclusion and social care policies in relation to Australians.

  • describe key policies that have shaped the delivery of human service provision in Australia
  • examine the economic foundations of social policy orientations within historical contexts
  • analyse Australian social policies in relation to issues of equity and equality
