Course overview
The aim of this course is to develop individual student research skills and emphasise the skills involved in evidence based practice research. Supervised clinical practice. High risk management techniques - diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, the neuropathic patient: Clinical management in University clinics. Ethical issues: confidentiality in management of the paediatric patient, mandatory reporting of child abuse, elder abuse, information access, issues of informed consent in treatment. Patient education techniques: small group and large group teaching, communication disorders. Operating room procedures and techniques. Paediatric assessment: interview and examination techniques, treatment techniques, education of the child.
Case studies and clinical presentations.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate proficiency in techniques of examination, interview, recording and diagnosis of patients with complex medical and podiatry problems in University clinics.
- In collaboration with staff, students and members of the wider profession, develop and present education sessions for patients or members of the community.
- Conduct simple nail surgery including pre-operative assessment and post-operative care.
- Demonstrate appropriate skills in the management and education of patients from a diverse range of cultural and language backgrounds including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in metropolitan, rural and remote settings.
- Demonstrate appropriate clinical skills in the assessment, diagnosis and management of paediatric patients both in University clinics and in the community setting.
