Course overview

The aim of this course is to broaden students' knowledge of factors affecting the overall health and well-being, and management of a patient, including aspects of ethnicity and culture, age and socioeconomic factors.

Rural Health; Aboriginal and The aim of this course is torres Strait islander health and Cultural Safety; Gerontology; Mental health conditions and managing patients with mental health concerns; Radiology and other medical imaging; Application of exercise physiology principles to patient management; Exercise management; Introduction to orthotic materials; Negative casting.

Course learning outcomes

  • Determine issues affecting the health and wellbeing of patients and practitioners in rural and remote settings
  • Discuss health issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the application of culturally safe practices in Podiatry Practice.
  • Explain the impact of ageing on patient health and well-being
  • Demonstrate the ability to proficiently select, and interpret appropriate medical imaging modalities
  • Demonstrated ability to select and perform a negative cast of the foot
  • Implement exercise management principles, including applying knowledge of exercise physiology, to the management of a podiatry patient
