Course overview
Students will conduct an independent research project in their major field under academic supervision. The course aims to develop specialised knowledge and capabilities for independent scientific research. Students will:
- Perform a literature review to identify knowledge gaps.
- Conduct research.
- Present findings in both written (thesis) and oral (seminar, defence) forms.

Course learning outcomes
- Develop a research plan, based on analysis of scientific literature demonstrating a detailed physical understanding of an advanced topic in physics.
- Design, implement, and document scientific research to test hypotheses or develop new insights, maintaining accurate records and a robust data management plan.
- Use specialised analytical, interpretation and evaluation skills and techniques necessary to carry out research in an advanced topic in physics.
- Effectively present scientific research findings in both written and oral forms, tailoring communication to both specialist and general audiences.
- Understand and apply ethical principles and regulatory requirements relevant to physics, and professional standards essential for conducting responsible scientific research.
