Course overview

This course provides students with a knowledge of optics and photonics.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe and explain the paraxial scalar wave equation, and the integral, Gaussian and guided mode solutions;
  • Apply wave optics to a range of problems;
  • Describe, explain and apply the Fresnel equation for the reflection and transmission of light for isotropic and anisotropic non-conducting media;
  • Describe and explain the operation of common optical components;
  • Describe and explain the structure and operation of simple lasers;
  • Use the tools, methodologies, language and conventions of physics to test and communicate ideas and explanations
