Course overview

This course enables students to develop concepts in quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics and electromagnetism with mathematical rigour such that the behaviour of the physical universe can be understood from a fundamental perspective.

Course learning outcomes

  • Define the concepts introduced in quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics and electromagnetism and explain how they are related
  • Use the knowledge in each of these areas of study to explain relevant aspects of the physical world
  • Use the mathematical techniques relevant to each area of study to solve straightforward and complex problems
  • Use computational methods to solve relevant problems that do not have an analytical solution
  • Work cooperatively in a team to develop an understanding of concepts and solve problems
  • Use the tools, methodologies, language and conventions of physics to communicate ideas and explanations
