Course overview

The aim of this course is to integrate and apply knowledge of pharmacotherapeutics, professional practice and research methodology acquired throughout the program. This is to be in a community pharmacy professional practice setting under supervision and mentoring to encourage further advancement of skills development in that practice setting. Students undertake an experiential placement and a research project in a community pharmacy practice setting. Practice will include the provision of services including primary health care; medication supply; medication history taking; medication management and review; medication counseling; medicines information; collection, analysis, evaluation and reporting of data.

Course learning outcomes

  • Display advanced knowledge and skills necessary to practice professionally, responsibly and with development of judgement in the community pharmacy context.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the complex nature of contemporary professional practice in the wider context of the Australian healthcare system and as it relates to interactions with other health professions.
  • Utilise professional standards and legal and ethical frameworks to understand their importance in their application to the individual patient and broader healthcare provision.
  • Demonstrate professional communication skills relevant to community pharmacy practice and research.
  • Collect and analyse data, interpret results, draw conclusions and provide suggestions on future research directions.
  • Reflect on personal practice and experience to identify areas of development in order to develop the professional skills required to practice as a pharmacist
