Course overview
The aim of this course is to develop students' preparation for practice through a sound knowledge of pharmacology and, pharmacotherapeutics, to support evidence based midwifery practice. Pharmacology; pharmacotherapeutics; pharmacodynamics; pharmacokinetics; prescribing principles; drug classifications; quality use of medicines; legal and ethical practice legislation; clinical reasoning, critical thinking, decision making, professional judgement; complementary therapies.

- Demonstrate a knowledge of essential concepts in pharmacology.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills in pharmacotherapeutics to support the supply and administration of medicines in midwifery practice.
- Explore the ethical and legal issues related to pharmacotherapeutics in midwifery practice.
- Discuss complementary therapies and their relationship with midwifery practice.
- Demonstrate application of quality use of medicines principles for safe and socially accountable midwifery practice.
- Apply the principles of prescribing according to the National Prescribing Services (NPS) competencies framework.
