Course overview
The aim of this course is to develop an understanding the pathophysiology of selected disorders and the modification of these processes through manipulation of pharmacological pathways.
The pathophysiology and pharmacology relevant to central nervous system disorders including; depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, insomnia, seizure disorders, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, Parkinson's disease, ADHD, emesis and migraine.
The pharmacology relating to substances of abuse including drugs for alcohol and nicotine dependence.
The pathophysiology and pharmacology relevant to endocrine disorders including; diabetes, thyroid disease, adrenal disease, osteoporosis, and male and female reproductive systems (including fertility).
Course learning outcomes
- Describe the pathophysiology of the diseases discussed in this course.
- Describe the mechanism of action of the drugs used in the disease states discussed in this course
- Explain how the mechanism of action is related to the beneficial and adverse effects of the drugs used to treat the disease states discussed in this course
- Explain the pharmacology of drugs used in the management of substance abuse including drugs for alcohol and nicotine dependence
- Describe the consequences of and explain the mechanism of drug-drug interactions for specific drug classes
