Course overview

This course will build on the skills students gained in previous courses and develop an understanding of cabaret performance as an entry point into small-scale performance and production. Students to develop a working knowledge of the genre in its historical and performance practice contexts and enhance their research, writing and performance skills particular to cabaret performance. Students will explore the art form and its origins and review contemporary Australian cabaret within historical and international contexts. Students analyse seminal works and the approach of key cabaret artists to musical texts and performance. The course is offered concurrently with the Adelaide Cabaret and the Cabaret Fringe Festivals and exploits opportunities for field trips to notable venues and shows, and first-hand contact with key contemporary cabaret artists. Students prepare and perform a performance in cabaret style or write about an aspect of cabaret.
