Course overview
The aim of this course is to develop and apply knowledge of nutritional requirements for optimal growth and development throughout the lifespan. Role of nutrients in the regulation of growth, maintenance and repair of tissues during the life stages: pre-natal, pregnancy and lactation, childhood, adolescence, adulthood (including the elderly). Special Nutritional concerns of children, adolescents and the elderly. Nutritional, environmental and sociocultural influences on body weight; health implications associated with overweight/obesity; evidence based approaches for weight management in children and adults.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe the nutritional requirements across the lifespan.
- Identify and explain the physiological changes across the lifespan and the underlying nutritional requirements for optimal growth and development.
- Describe the role of genetic, environmental and sociocultural influences on weight management.
- Apply evidence-based diet and exercise principles to design plans for healthy eating and weight loss in adults with consideration of external influences on weight management using case studies.
