Course overview

The course aims to equip registered nurses and midwives with advanced knowledge and skill to safely prescribe medications in the context or scope of their practice. By applying the concept of pharmacotherapeutics the course aims to equip clinicians with the necessary skills to seek endorsement or be accredited to prescribe.

Course learning outcomes

  • Provide registered nurses and midwives with the knowledge and skills to manage the assessment, diagnosis, prescribing, management, evaluation and deprescribing of medications safely in their context of practice
  • Apply the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to relevant medications in the context of practice and scope of practice
  • Select, prescribe, and administer appropriate medications under state and territory legislation integrating advanced assessment, diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills in a person-centred approach
  • Effectively communicate with the patient/woman and the interprofessional team to optimise health outcomes and ensure continuity of care
