Course overview

This course will enable registered nurses to develop the specialised knowledge and skills to provide safe, competent patient centred care in the perioperative environment. Fundamentals, competencies, principles and concepts of perioperative nursing; environmental control, asepsis and infection control; patient safety and risk management; national and international guidelines, standards and policies; medication safety; medico-legal and ethical issues; teamwork, communication skills and resilience building; research awareness; reflective practice, critical thinking and evidence based practice.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically evaluate the professional and industry standards, policies and principles that guide responsible and accountable perioperative nursing practice in managing risk and patient safety.
  • Identify and examine the roles, responsibilities and scopes of practice of midwives, nurses and other health professionals caring for patients throughout the perioperative continuum.
  • Apply critical thinking and evidence-based clinical decision making in the management of a surgical patient within the perioperative environment.
  • Demonstrate safe and competent clinical practice in the perioperative environment.
  • Develop critical awareness of the range of skills and mechanisms required for effective communication and collaboration with intra and inter-disciplinary team members within the dynamic and complex perioperative setting.
  • Explore strategies for promoting self-care and building resilience in the perioperative setting.
