Course overview

In this course students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to develop leadership and/or management roles in nursing, midwifery and health services. Theories of leadership and management and their application to nursing, midwifery and health services; emotional intelligence; building resilience; creating influence; change management (leading and building multi disciplinary teams); organisational development, nursing and multi-disciplinary staff development, mentoring staff; performance management; managing staff; resource management.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically analyse leadership styles and management processes in nursing and midwifery context.
  • Apply theories and principles of leadership to progress nursing and midwifery models of care.
  • Differentiate between leadership and management.
  • Explain how leadership development and leadership skills are used to build high performing multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Discuss the key challenges for leadership in contemporary health systems.
  • Design an approach to leadership that could result in successful transformation in the workplace.
