Course overview

This course of study builds on the topics covered in Semester 1. It will enable the student to apply the concepts of epidemiology, pathophysiology and disease process to specific malignancies and how they are managed. Sub speciality paediatric haematology/oncology care is also addressed; other specific areas will include nutrition and oncology emergencies.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply the concepts of epidemiology, aetiology, pathophysiology and disease process in relation to specific malignancies
  • Discuss effects of cancer, their potential impact on the person with cancer and nursing care to manage these
  • Critically analyse the consumer perspective in cancer care
  • Identify cancer emergencies that may develop from cancer or treatment effects and discuss how these are prevented and managed
  • Integrate evidence based information on oncology nursing practice with clinical experience and understanding
  • Explain the impact of cancer in paediatric and geriatric patients and specific nursing management required in these groups
