Course overview
Students will critically evaluate and apply epidemiological concepts, principles and study designs relevant to the advanced clinical practice or Nurse Practitioner context and client populations. Contents include: Determinants of health / Risks factors; priority population and age groups, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, national health priorities; principles and practices of epidemiology and social epidemiology: public health and primary health care; population datasets and health data sources, incidence and prevalence; burden of disease; health outcomes; reading survey data; Common epidemiological research designs- Descriptive, cross sectional, analytical, cohort studies; relative risks/odds ratio, confidence intervals, p values , descriptive statistics.
Course learning outcomes
- Critically appraise population based perspectives of the distribution and determinants of health for specific clients, or population groups including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Differentiate between and apply principles of epidemiology, social epidemiology, public health, primary health care and population health.
- Critically evaluate data sets and outcome measurements relevant to the advanced practice/clinical role, context, and scope of practice.
- Appraise, interpret and translate common epidemiological research designs and statistics.
- Apply epidemiological principles and practice to public health interventions that focus on risk factors and their outcomes.
