Course overview
This course aims to equip clinicians with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognise and respond to clinical deterioration in critical care settings. Students will develop advanced assessment skills and learn to provide effective nursing management for critically ill patients and their families, while promoting compassionate and therapeutic patient and family-focused care.
Course learning outcomes
- Recognise and respond to signs of clinical deterioration in diverse critical care patients and initiate appropriate interventions based on advanced assessment skills
- Discuss how to communicate critical information effectively with other health professionals, patients and families, including those who are intubated or nonverbal
- Conduct systematic, evidence-based advanced health assessments of critically ill people
- Critically analyse health assessment findings, including diagnostic data, to prioritise care of critically unwell people
- Demonstrate clinical competence in evidence-based nursing management of clients with complex critical illness
- Discuss the impact of technology on patient outcomes, safety, and quality of care delivery within critical care settings
