Course overview

To research, analyse and demonstrate knowledge and skills in the management of women experiencing complexity in childbirth. Students will demonstrate evidence based, woman centred care.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically analyse and synthesize knowledge of physiological deviations from normal across the childbirth continuum to inform clinical judgement and practice
  • Critically evaluate and articulate the complex interplay between pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period and its impact on the psychological, social, and cultural wellbeing of women and their families, facilitating an integrated approach to care
  • Design and implement advanced, woman-centred, evidence-based care strategies for managing complications during the antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods, demonstrating leadership in clinical decision-making
  • Evaluate and apply sophisticated technological solutions in the management of childbirth, critically assessing their implications on women and their families to promote optimal clinical outcomes
  • Analyse and interpret the legal and ethical dimensions of maternal healthcare practice, demonstrating an ability to navigate and influence these frameworks in the advancement of midwifery care
  • Synthesise concepts of continuity of care with advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge to improve system-wide practices and outcomes for women experiencing complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period
  • Exhibits mastery of verbal, written and professional communication, underpinned by the core tenets of midwifery philosophy, and upholding academic integrity and ethical practice

  • must have completed all of MIDW5000 Evidence Based Midwifery and Research/MIDW5001 Preparation for Midwifery Practice/MIDW5002 Care of the Neonate/MIDW5900 Masters Midwifery Practice Experience 1/MIDW5901 Masters Midwifery Practice Experience 2/NURS5025 Aboriginal Health and Wellness
