Course overview

The aim of this course is to enable students to consolidate graduate level midwifery knowledge, attitude and skills in a clinical practice environment and to achieve the course objectives in alignment with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice through midwifery clinical placements. Woman-centred, evidence-based and comprehensive midwifery care across the childbirth continuum in all midwifery settings; advocacy in midwifery practice; models of midwifery care; ethical and culturally safe practice; clinical pathways; clinical reasoning; referral and consultation guidelines; midwifery research and practice; application of pharmacokinetics and medication management; personal and professional development; portfolio; continuity of care; maternal and neonatal safety and quality; midwifery standards; resilience; compassion; leadership; communication; respectful partnerships; professional boundaries; transition to professional practice.

Course learning outcomes

  • Independently plan and practice safe and effective woman-centred midwifery care across the childbirth continuum for the woman and or neonate experiencing normal and/-or complex needs in accordance with legislative frameworks and the NMBA National practice standards for the Midwife.
  • Accept accountability and responsibility for own actions and participates in respectful professional partnership within the healthcare team.
  • Plan and implement appropriate communication strategies to promote an optimal physical, psychosocial and culturally safe environment for women and their families.
  • Use research to plan and evaluate evidence-based midwifery practice within contemporary Australian society.
  • Promote and advocate for primary and public health in midwifery practice for women, their families and the community.
  • Evaluate outcomes to improve quality of midwifery practice and act upon personal and professional development needs as a reflective practitioner.
  • Demonstrate documentation of professional practice and learning experiences through an e-portfolio.
