Course overview

The aim of this course is to enable students to demonstrate consolidated midwifery knowledge, attitude and skills in a clinical practice environment and to achieve the course objectives in alignment with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice through midwifery clinical placements. Collaboration; teamwork; supporting perinatal mental health and wellbeing, assessment of perinatal mental health and specific mental illness (mood and anxiety); management of mental illness during antenatal, intra partum and postnatal periods; assessment of anxiety and depression using standardised tools including ANRQ and the EPDS; evidence-based, ethical and culturally safe practice; reflective practice and woman-centred care in the presence of psychological issues; women's health, advocacy, equity and rights, compassion, addressing challenges in communication; managing conflict; personal and professional development; e-portfolio; continuity of care; safety and quality; primary health; midwifery practice standards; professional boundaries; workforce preparation.

Course learning outcomes

  • Plan and provide safe and effective woman-centred midwifery care across the childbirth continuum for the woman and or neonate experiencing normal and or complex needs in accordance with legislative frameworks and the NMBA Midwife Standards for Practice.
  • Accept accountability and responsibility for own actions and participates in respectful, professional partnerships within the healthcare team.
  • Plan and implement appropriate communication strategies to promote an optimal physical, psychosocial and cultural environment for women and their families.
  • Use evidence-based research to plan and evaluate practice within contemporary Australian society.
  • Promote and advocate for public health in midwifery practice for women, their families and the community.
  • Evaluate outcomes to improve quality of midwifery practice and act upon personal and professional development needs as a reflective practitioner.
  • Demonstrate documentation of professional practice and learning experiences through an e-portfolio.
